This is one of my favourite photos I’ve captured this year. It was shot at Terrigal Beach, where I spend many mornings and an occasional afternoon walking, talking and coffee shopping with Linda… my number one. This photo was uncommissioned, wasn’t shot on one of my professional cameras and there are a number of things that make it so special.
The first thing is that it just feels good. Graphically it’s a simple image with few elements but I’m drawn to the girl and her dog. The way she looks in control, in command, confident with her head held high. I don’t think I ever felt that confident at that age.
I love the scattered and drying puddles, the empty beach and the power line leading my eye to the tree and back to the girl with her dog.
This photos reminds me of a painting, it’s like a painting, one I would paint if I could paint.
Maybe I’m reading way too much into this simple scene. Maybe it just reminds me of my mornings, my home town, my beach. Whatever the reason, I think this photos deserves to be printed.
I also believe this girl, or her family deserve a copy… Unfortunately, I don’t know who she is or who they are. Maybe I’ll see them again sometime.
