This was a pretty special family shoot for a number of reasons.
Firstly. I photographed Aleshia and Phil’s wedding about ten years ago – it was one of my first weddings and was back in the day of film. (As a side note, I gave a careers talk to 150 Year 7’s earlier this week and they didn’t know what film was – I think that was the first time I have ever felt old.) Anyway, back to the wedding – we all had a great time and we captured some fantastic images at Linton Gardens where they had their reception.
Secondly. They asked me to shoot their family portrait a few years ago when they only had two children. At this time, Aleisha was getting into photography herself and decided to really test my skills by requesting a mid morning shoot on the beach in full, directly overhead (read: very unflattering) sunshine. Not only that, Milly was in a bad mood and didn’t want to be there and I’m pretty sure they bribed Lincoln with all sorts of treats if he DIDN”T co-operate with me. To say this shoot was a challenge is an understatement but I somehow managed some shots while both Phil and Aleisha enjoyed watching me work my butt off. I was ready to give up photographing families following that shoot.
Having a second chance at the family shoot was something I was looking forward to – hesitantly.
Thirdly. Since that family shoot, both our families have become close and we get together often; so it was going to be extra special for me to be able to capture some great photos of my friends and their children.
Below are a few of the images from the shoot and yes, the kids were a pleasure to shoot this time.
Aaawww you guys! Why would we go anywhere else? Although I could offer you a few tips Andrew…hmmm maybe not.
It was your idea to do the mid morning shoot last time. And as I remember at the time of the shoot I actually didn’t know you were struggling. It was after it was all finished and the sweat beads were dripping off your forehead and you quite simply stated “that was the hardest portrait shoot i have ever done”. A true professional. It was my first real photography lesson: note to self dont shoot in full sun and dont let the kids run for the entire shoot, and dont let on that you just want to kill the kid!
This time the only bribing I did to my kids was to say to them, “just do what Andrew says because you dont want him to get cranky”. That was clearly enough as you have captured their individuality perfectly.
Thank you so much, you are a very talented man, giving us happy memories forever.
Lovely pictures of the Hey family. Aleisha, I’m sure you bribed the kids more than that, lol :))
Thanks Nyrie – I’m sure Aleisha used more to bribe the kids than she makes out as well!
