It was all fun and games till one of the girls hit the deck screaming in pain with a twisted look of anguish on her face. I though the leg was broken for sure. The other girls must have too, they immediately stopped with the closest skaters from each team yelling for help.
Last week I didn’t have a clue that Roller Derby existed in Australia, let alone the Central Coast. I was told about it by Sam Woods who mentioned her daughter Jordi competed (or played – I’m not up with the lingo yet). Jordi! was my reply… sweet little skinny Jordi… no way!
It’s true, she does, although she goes by the name “Demolition Doll” when on skates.
I turned up last night to see the match up between the Outcast Demons (the local team) take on the Sydney Uni Roller Derby and what a great spectacle. Colour, screaming and yelling, big smiles, fierce determination, laughs, good solid competition, some hard hit ups, sausage sandwiches and a few beers.
Below are some of the photos I grabbed, if you get a chance, go check it out… sure beats sitting in front of the telly.
Oh yeah, the girl who went down screaming; her leg was broken and torn ligaments were the outcome. Once she overcame the initial pain, she dragged herself off the court so the match up could go on. Tough chick!
